Baking a decent-looking birthday cake at home can be difficult. Sure, anyone can open a box of cake mix, add eggs and oil, and stir — but what happens when it’s time to decorate it? For most of us, decorating a cake feels like an insurmountable task. But an ingenious new trick to help you easily make your homemade cakes even more beautiful than store-bought is making its way around the internet, and people are rushing to try it.

Kate and Louise from Craft & Crumb, a brand that sells award-winning kits for crafting and baking, shared their go-to cake decorating hack in an Instagram Reel.

“Just grab some sprinkles, place in a shallow bowl, and pipe melted chocolate in the shape of your number straight into it,” they shared in the caption. Then, all you have to do is leave it in the fridge for an hour to set and voila! You’ve got yourself a homemade (and dare we say gorgeous?) cake topper.

You don’t have to stick to just numbers, either. Anything you can pipe with melted chocolate can be turned into a cake topper. You can spell out words, make initials, or even add hearts, stars, and other easy-to-draw shapes. The possibilities are endless, and it’s so easy that anyone can do it.

“I love doing this,” one person wrote in the comments. “I’m gonna have my toddler do this as an activity tomorrow; she will love it,” wrote another.

If you’d rather have cake toppers that are set into your cake vertically, Kate and Louise suggest laying down parchment, piping the chocolate numbers onto lollipop sticks, and then adding the sprinkles before refrigerating. Once they’ve set, just stick them into the cake like you would candles or other cake toppers. Honestly, it’s nothing short of brilliant.
