Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
The New York Times reports Nathan J. Hochman, the Los Angeles County district attorney, has announced the charges two days after the deaths of both Rob and Michele. Nick Reiner did not appear in court on Tuesday for the first hearing, as he had not been medically cleared to be transferred to the courthouse from the jail according to his attorney Alan Jackson.
Reports also state that both Rob and Michele had been dead for “several hours” before someone found them. The two were discovered by their daughter Romy around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 14.
Both Rob and Michele had gotten into a “very loud argument” with Nick hours prior to the stabbings, with one close friend telling the Post: “They had had an argument at Conan‘s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating.”
The two counts of first-degree murder carry a maximum sentence of the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The New York Times further noted Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton of the Los Angeles Police Department said Nick Reiner was arrested without incident Sunday night near Exposition Park, not far from the campus of the University of Southern California.
Rob Reiner had plenty of legendary movies under his belt, though metal fans know him as the director and writer of the 1984 classic This Is Spinal Tap (and the 2025 sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues).
